Studio

Here is a picture of my workspace at university. My work is inspired by African tribal art and make up looks I have created on my sister. I have been doing a lot of textural art work using feathers, paint, oil pastels, glass paint etc.

Winding my warp

Started winding my warp up which I am finding very fiddly as im using a silk yarn doubled up which is very fine. I i'm learning from my mistakes which is good and will help me in the future.

Common Purpose

I did a four day leadership course with Common Purpose. I really enjoyed meeting new people and interacting with a variety of speakers. I came away with many good skills that will help me in the future.

Knit & stitch show

Me and my class mates made a variety of textile goods to raise money for new designers. I think our stand looked really good and we made quite a lot of money as well as displaying our recent work in the back, which got a lot of good feed back on.

Space/florals

I decided to change my summer project from Indian fashion, to a space theme encropated with florals as that was more down my alley way.

Here in this image I re created some of the plants from the movie Avatar as this movie has a space feel to it.

I felt that it was successful using oil pastels to create texture and the differnt colour tones to give it a realistic feel.

Welcome to my Blog

My decision to study textiles at university is one that I have wanted to do for a long time. I am interested in all fields of art and design but particularly textiles, surface pattern and fashion.
I am currently in my 2nd year studying for a Btec National Diploma in Art and Design at Leeds City College. I have learnt to become more independent when generating and developing my ideas by doing mind map and session evaluations. Researching various fashion designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Jean Charles Castelbajac and  Gareth Pugh has also inspired me, also experimenting with a range of different materials such as wire, fabrics and feathers.
I have worked on assignments for Printmaking, Observational drawing, Packaging and a Constructed book and I particularly enjoyed the most recent assignment working with a ‘Grid of circles’. This involved creating texture using a glue gun, brusho and wire ad based around the ‘eye’. I have also developed my communication and evaluation skills through group discussions and presentations.
I draw to express my creativity and to relax along with learning how to use a sewing machine as I enjoy creating my own individual clothes designs inspired by unique fashion stars such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce. I think it is important to have an individual style because that brings out your personality.
My main interests & hobbies lie in the Arts, fashion and textiles. I read magazines such as Vogue and glamour to see what the latest trends are. I also like to visit art galleries, I recently visited the Yorkshire sculpture park and I loved the work of Jaume Plensa whose work is based around sculptural heads made from wire and clay. I love the fact that his work is enormous and looks fantastic placed in the landscape.
Currently I am doing life drawing and I find it quite difficult as it’s the first time I have ever done it but at the same time am enjoying it I have produced some interesting pieces of work with surface texture and directional marks.
I intend to base my Major Final Project around textiles and fashion basing my theme around the ‘eye’ which is developing ideas around my previous assignment ‘Grid of circles’. I am so excited to start this project and I look forward to showing you my work at interview.
